Radiant Cooling, Comfort Redefined.

Experience comfort without compromise, experience Messana.

After 10 years designing some of the most complex HVAC systems in the United States, Messana Radiant Cooling can offer expert insights for any HVAC system:

Radiant Ceilings, Radiant Floor Cooling, Hydronic Fan Coils, VRF/VRV.

We’ll work with your architects, engineers, and installers to simplify system design and installation.

Silent and Invisible

Radiant Cooling and Heating, hidden within your ceiling

A Ray Magic® radiant ceiling uses hot/cold water to provide silent and invisible heating/cooling from behind the drywall of your ceiling.

In heating, a radiant ceiling radiates thermal energy to your body, which your body absorbs to make you feel warmer. In cooling, a radiant ceiling draws the thermal energy away from your body, leaving you feeling cooler.

Using water to transfer thermal energy significantly improves system efficiency when compared to traditional forced air systems.

Additionally, systems that use water to transfer thermal energy can use more sustainable energy sources such as air-to-water heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, solar thermal collectors, etc.

Radiant Cooling... Feel the difference

Creating a chilled ceiling to pull thermal energy away from your body.

To provide radiant cooling, an air-to-water heat pump is typically used to generate cold water. Then, this cold water is then pumped through Ray Magic® radiant ceiling panels, resulting in a cold ceiling surface temperature.

Thermal energy can only move from hot objects to cooler ones. So, in radiant cooling, thermal energy is being radiated from your body to the ceiling panels, resulting in a cooling sensation.

Consequently, this slightly increases the temperature of the panels, which are then cooled back down as we continue to pump chilled water through the ceiling.

But how do you avoid condensation?

Luckily, since our panels have a low thermal mass, we can quickly change their temperature to avoid condensation. Messana Controls uses mSense room comfort sensors to monitor the dew point temperature, and then adjusts the radiant surface temperature to avoid condensation. Additionally, Messana ATUs can perform neutral temperature dehumidification to lower the dew-point within an environment, allowing us to use colder water with the radiant ceiling panels.

Radiant Heating from above, the way nature intended

Using hot water within your ceiling to radiate thermal energy to your body.

Throughout the HVAC industry, it is undisputed that radiant heating provides the highest level of comfort compared to forced-air systems.

Unfortunately, one of the main drawbacks of a radiant system is that the thermal mass is often large because the radiant system is typically installed within the floor.

Messana has avoided this issue by developing the low-mass Ray Magic® radiant ceiling panels to minimize the heating and cooling response time.

But doesn’t heat rise?

No! Heat only knows movement from hot objects to cooler ones. Hot air is what rises, so, just like the Sun, a radiant ceiling can still radiate thermal energy downward.

Hydronic Fan Coils, a flexible forced air option for hydronic systems

Sustainable hydronic air units.

Alternatively, Hydronic fan coils can easily be integrated with any Messana system. Whether you require additional heating or cooling support for a radiant system or prefer a standalone air-based heating and cooling solution, hydronic fan coils can be tailored to any project’s specific budget and needs.

To enhance control and functionality, Messana has developed “J Series” zoning modules that efficiently manage Jaga fan coils within our advanced Messana Controls platform. Moreover, select Jaga fan coil models can even be powered by mZone J Series modules, further expanding their versatility and compatibility.

As an authorized distributor of Jaga hydronic fan coils (with exclusivity in CA), Messana presents a wide range of quiet and efficient fan coil options that effectively deliver conditioned air to your space while utilizing sustainable energy sources.

Radiant Floors, experience comfort with every step

Using hot or cold water to turn your floor into a radiant surface.

Additionally, hydronic radiant floors can also provide a highly efficient alternative to traditional forced air systems. Although radiant floors provide less output in heating and cooling, many clients still desire a radiant surface to walk on.

For this reason, we have partnered with our long-standing associates at WBI, who specialize in highly efficient and responsive radiant floor systems, which are well-suited for radiant cooling and heating applications using Messana Controls.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you’d like to explore the various options you have for your hydronic HVAC system!

What is a Radiant Floor?

A radiant floor is a type of heating and cooling system that uses the surface area of the floor to transfer thermal energy to or from the objects in a room through radiation. Radiant floors can be electric (heating only) or hydronic (heating and cooling). mControls can manage both types of radiant floors to maximize occupant comfort.

What is a Hydronic Fan Coil?

A hydronic fan coil is a type of heating and cooling system that uses hot or chilled water to control the temperature of a room. It consists of a heat exchanger, a fan, and a coil, and is typically installed within the wall, ceiling, or floor. The heat exchanger is connected to a water source, which can be an air-to-water heat pump, boiler, or a chiller, and circulates the water through the coil to provide heating or cooling to the room. The fan within the unit distributes the air that passes over the coil, introducing either warm or cool air to the room.

What is Radiant Heating?

Radiant heating is an energy-efficient heating technology that, unlike traditional forced-air systems that heat the air, employs warm radiant surfaces like ceilings or floors to deliver infrared heat directly to objects and people within a space. Radiant heating creates a comfortable, even distribution of warmth, without the need for visible and noisy equipment.

What is Condensation?

Condensation forms on cold surfaces when the air surrounding the surface is humid and the surface temperature drops below the dew point temperature of the air. mSense room comfort sensors continuously monitor the dew point in each room and Messana Controls ensure that the radiant ceiling or floor surface temperature never falls below the dew point to avoid condensation.

What is Radiant Cooling?

Radiant cooling is an energy-efficient cooling technology that, unlike traditional forced-air systems that cool the air, employs chilled radiant surfaces like ceilings or floors to directly absorb the heat radiated by objects and people within a space. Radiant cooling creates a comfortable, even distribution of coolness, without the need for visible and noisy equipment.

What is a Radiant Ceiling?

A radiant ceiling is a type of heating and cooling hydronic terminal that uses the large unobstructed surface area of the ceiling to transfer thermal energy to or from the objects in a room through thermal radiation. Radiant ceilings can be used as a standalone terminal or in conjunction with other heating and cooling systems to provide an energy-efficient and effective indoor climate solution.
